Sweden’s Next Frontier in Shipping
Erik Thun Group from Sweden has pulled back the curtain on what could be the future of maritime transport: their battery hybrid, dry cargo vessel series – the Lake Vanern Max. The advanced ships are being crafted at the reputable Shipyard Ferus Smit in the Netherlands, marking a significant stride towards more sustainable, efficient shipping.
Specifically designed with a battery pack, the Lake Vanern Max streamlines power and curbs the need for auxiliary generators in electricity production. In fact, the vessel can even comfortably stay anchored without employing auxiliary engines.
Shaping Cleaner Maritime Operations
Implementing a unique strategy for port operations, the Lake Vanern Max relies onshore connection for clean, silent functionality. This extraordinary innovation allows for the obligate shutdown of all onboard engines, opposing pollutant emissions that routinely occur during port stayovers.
Innovative Propulsion System
The Lake Vanern Max also incorporates an ingeniously curated propulsion system. The sizable propeller, positioned within a vortex, performs optimally while generating amplified thrust. This feature particularly shines in low-speed scenarios, curtailing power demand during enduring seaways, such as the Göta Älv, and during icebreaking maneuvers.
The minimalistic main engine power delivers peak performance, satisfying the demanding conditions of Ice Class 1B. Thanks to the variable propeller coupled with the automatic combinator, the system ceaselessly selects the ideal load point, enhancing propeller productivity and curbing fuel usage.
An All-Inclusive Powerhouse on the Sea
The Erik Thun Group is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that Lake Vanern Max’s power consumption remains minimal. By integrating cooling water heat exchangers with both main and auxiliary engines, the vessel can recuperate surplus energy.
Senior charterer Jens Bäckström highlights the company’s significant investment in catering to client transportation needs. He adds, “We are thereby strengthening our position even further on the short-sea market and on the Lake Vanern traffic.”
Looking Ahead
The avant-garde vessels will be deployed starting in September 2024. “We are proud to lead the way in maritime innovation by introducing the Lake Vanern Max,” states Henrik Källsson, Deputy Managing Director at Erik Thun Group. “These vessels exemplify our unwavering commitment to sustainable shipping and pave the way for a greener and more prosperous future.”
