In a landmark move, Glamox, the renowned lighting solutions specialist, has secured a lucrative contract from prominent Chinese shipbuilder Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Limited. The deal centers around illuminating two innovative Wind Turbine Installation Vessels (WTIVs) owned by Havfram Wind. These state-of-the-art vessels are set to ignite a new era of wind power, capable of installing colossal wind turbines with rotor blades exceeding 300 meters in diameter.
Ingenious LED Solutions Enhancing Operational Efficiency
Meticulously designed to strike a favourable balance between aesthetic appeal and functionality, these Havfram NG-20000X-HF vessels will be outfitted with roughly 3,300 of Glamox’s cutting-edge energy-efficient LED luminaires. Both interior and exterior sections of each vessel will be illuminated, keeping an uncompromising focus on safety while reducing carbon footprints. These two WTIVs are slated to commence operations in 2026, being constructed currently at Yantai, China.
A Visionary Leap in Offshore Industry
These flagship WTIVs embody a transformative advancement on multiple fronts. Not only will they carry the latest offshore wind turbines, but they are also equipped to transport extra-large (XXL) monopiles weighing up to a staggering 3,000 tonnes in waters as deep as 70 meters. This exceptional capacity is owed to the vessel’s integral 3,200-tonne capacity crane. Simultaneously, the onboard battery-hybrid drivetrain technology coupled with Glamox’s LED luminaires position these vessels among the most energy-efficient in the offshore industry.
Casting a Sustainable Light on Offshore Ventures
Glamox will deploy LED luminaires spanning the entirety of the vessels—ranging from crew quarters, corridors, stairwells, and platforms, to work areas. A diverse mix of lights has been earmarked for each section, namely floodlights, searchlights, emergency and explosion-proof lighting, navigation and signal lights, ceiling lights, linear luminaires, downlights, and compact bed lights. Havfram Wind’s CEO, Even Larsen, emphasizes the strategy to endorse top-quality, energy-efficient lighting, thus ensuring their company’s position as a true leader in the pursuit of reducing emissions per MW of installed wind.
Forecasting a Bright Future
Looking further afield, Glamox’s Chief Commercial & Sales Officer, Marine, Offshore & Wind, Håkon Helmersen, predicts substantial growth in the lighting demand for construction and support vessels, turbines, platforms, and substations. “With about 230 wind farms expected in European waters by 2030, these two vessels designed by GustoMSC represent a quantum leap forward for the WTIV industry, bringing sustainable development of the marine and offshore environment”, he stated. The luminaire deliveries are expected in February and December 2024, with Glamox already bagging a recent contract to provide marine LED lighting for eight vessels owned by Norwegian marine seismic survey firm PGS.
