The Thrilling Seaways Rescue Mission
After being taken into custody, all 15 stowaways who managed to sneak aboard the Turkish-flagged Ro-Ro cargo ship, Galata Seaways, are now safely in the hands of Italian authorities. Despite initial rumors, the stowaways did not threaten the crew or illegally commandeer the vessel, and no piracy charges have been filed. However, questions linger as the Italian investigation intends to reveal the true intentions of these stowaways and the exact circumstances that led to this maritime ordeal.
Turkish Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, pictured the event as tense yet salvageable in his statement: “The operation was completed successfully. The stowaways on the Turkish-flagged Galata Seaways were caught by the Italian security forces as a result of a search and disembarked. We would like to thank all our officials who contributed; I convey my best wishes to our sailors.”
A Helicopter Operation with a Twist
When two stowaways tried to break into the locked engine room and others were seen to be holding weapons, the alarmed crew informed the Turkish authorities, who instructed them to divert the ship to Naples and barricade themselves in secure areas. Italy’s elite San Marco Brigade sprang into action, requesting permission to board the vessel from helicopters as navy and coast guard vessels drew near.
Around six hours later, the heavily armed rescuers entered the Galata Seaways cargo ship to find the stowaways hiding on board. In addition to two knives and a box cutter, 15 people from diverse nationalities were discovered, including a pregnant woman, one person with a suspected broken ankle, another suffering hypothermia, and the remaining 11 individuals in good health. The stowaways never posed a threat to the crew, contrary to earlier reports.
The Stowaways: Fugitives or Refugees?
As the investigation continues, Italian media suggests these stowaways were merely seeking refuge, hiding from potential deportation. The nationality of one stowaway remains unknown, but the others are from Iraq, Syria, Iran, and possibly Afghanistan. As they receive medical care, police detain the remaining individuals to uncover their purpose aboard the ship.
