Transitioning from Conventional Power to Zero-Emissions Fuel
Future Proof Shipping’s (FPS) container vessel, the FPS Waal, has recently anchored at Werkendam’s Holland Shipyards Group in the Netherlands, initiating the transformation that will run on eco-friendly hydrogen power. The FPS Waal’s conversion follows in the wake of the FPS Maas which was recently rechristened as the H2 Barge 1, signaling a significant step forward in sustainable maritime operations. The vessel’s internal combustion engines will be jettisoned, making way for an innovative, emission-free power system.
This advance in technology will feature robust Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells, hydrogen storage, battery packs, and an electric drive train, setting the stage for energy-efficient operations.
Installation of Futuristic Propulsion System
The coming weeks will witness a rapid overhaul of the vessel’s central and generator engines. Holland Shipyards Group will replace these conventional systems with Ballard Power System’s state-of-the-art fuel cells and design a dedicated battery room within the cargo hold.
This green revolution within the maritime industry was facilitated through generous funding from notable entities like Interreg North Sea Region Programme, Flagships H2020 Project, and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.
The H2 Barge 1: A Testament to Green Shipping
The H2 Barge 1 has been a green pioneer, having operated successfully between the bustling Port of Rotterdam and the BCTN terminal in Meerhout, Belgium since May. On charter to BCTN, the vessel has proudly served Nike EMEA, based in the close vicinity of Laakdal.
Zero-emissions Ship Projects: A Future-proof Vision
As a frontrunner in advocating for sustainable solutions within the shipping industry, Future Proof Shipping is pursuing an ambitious target. The company aspires to launch ten zero-emissions ship projects within the imminent five-year horizon, concentrating its efforts on manifesting a greener future. This vision is an embodiment of the firm’s commitment to shaping the maritime industry toward environmentally friendly operations.
