Peninsula, a world-renowned marine fuel supplier, and trading firm, has achieved yet another milestone with its first delivery of a biofuel bunker to Norden, a globally recognized shipping company. Utilizing a B24 blend, the cargo, La Luna, at Gibraltar received a unique concoction of 24% biofuel, extracted from used cooking oil, and Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) on June 19th.
This remarkable stride in environmental preservation was communicated via an email statement on Monday. The strategic shift towards biofuel blends was initially showcased in February, indicating Peninsula’s dedication to pioneering sustainable innovations.
The Targeted Geographic Strategy
Peninsula’s head of sustainability, Nacho de Miguel, says the company’s biofuel supply focus will be concentrated in major seaports that demonstrate substantial and robust demand. Miguel remarked, “The Mediterranean is a key region for global shipping, and the Gibraltar Strait enjoys an excellent strategic vantage point to capture the imminent increase in biofuel demand.”
Gibraltar, a Gateway to Eco-Friendly Maritime Future
Given its geographical advantage, the Strait of Gibraltar is ideally positioned to witness a surge in global biofuel demand. The radical shift to eco-friendly marine fuel recognizes the Peninsula’s role in synchronizing the demands of global maritime trade with more efficient and environmentally friendly solutions.
Transforming the Maritime Industry Towards a Greener Future
Miguel expressed confidence in Peninsula’s ability to make groundbreaking contributions to the decarbonization of global shipping. He stated, “We are certain that Peninsula will play an important role in providing biofuel solutions to our global customer base as we collectively progress towards decarbonization.”
This strategic shift will not only alter the maritime industry’s consumption patterns but will also reshape the global energy landscape. The integration of biofuels into shipping will form a significant part of the industry’s push for sustainability, and Peninsula is helping set the sails for this journey toward a greener shipping landscape.
