Singapore-based Pavilion Energy and China’s CNOOC Gas and Power Group have successfully concluded their pioneering liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship-to-ship bunkering endeavor. This activity revolved around a massive crude carrier at China’s Guangzhou port according to an announcement on Thursday.

In this groundbreaking venture, a staggering 2,800 metric tons of LNG was transported from CNOOC’s LNG bunker vessel, the Hai Yang Shi You 301, directly to the massive VLCC Maran Dione. This energy behemoth belongs to Angelicoussis Group’s Maran Tankers Management portfolio.

The Tripartite Partnership Towards LNG

The bunkering operation serves as a testament to the efficacy of the agreement forged last year between Pavilion Energy, CNOOC, and the Finnish corporation Gasum. Their collaborative pact aimed to establish a global network dedicated to supplying LNG as a pivotal fuel source for maritime vessels.

The operation marked a significant landmark for Pavilion Energy’s ventures into providing LNG bunkering solutions beyond their home turf. Correspondingly, for CNOOC, this was their inaugural delivery to an LNG-fueled VLCC in anchorage across Chinese waters, elaborated the companies.

Trailblazers in Energy Conservation

The LNG-fueled VLCC positions itself as Maran Tankers’ latest dual-fuel addition to their VLCC line-up, promising substantial reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. The innovative marine wonder can diminish carbon dioxide emissions by an impressive 50% compared to VLCCs assembled in 2008.

The Managing Director of Maran Tankers, Mark Pearson, reaffirmed the company’s innovative strides in his statement. Speaking about MTM’s current projects, he revealed that they are expecting an additional eight dual-fuel suezmaxes in their fleet shortly. This comes on top of the four dual-fuel VLCCs that were received earlier this year.

Charting the Future of LNG with CNOOC

CNOOC is embarking on a fast track towards the creation of their LNG bunker fleet with grand schemes to broaden their bunker network along China’s coastline, as per the joint press release.

This dive into LNG bunkering exhibits how central the fuel is becoming to global maritime transportation, offering both an economically viable and environmentally friendly solution. With Pavilion Energy and CNOOC paving the way, the industry will likely see more companies investing in LNG technology in the future.
