Unveiling an ambitious plan to bolster Sweden’s renewable energy capacity, Stockholm-based developer OX2 has announced its innovative project to establish a new offshore wind farm off the coast of Gotland. Coined as the “Ran” offshore wind farm, this project will be staking out territory within 12 kilometers of Gotland’s eastern shore, promising a monumental step forward in sustainable energy distribution.
The Ran Offshore Wind Farm and Pleione Energy Park: A Dual Approach
Not content with the creation of one impressive wind energy prospect, OX2 will also be working on the Pleione energy park, strategically positioned approximately 35 km offshore from Gotland’s eastern coast. This dual scheme will have a staggering combined power generation capability of 2.8 GW. It’s a force to be reckoned with – rendering approximately 13 TWh of fossil-free energy every year, this accounts for nearly 9% of Sweden’s existing electricity consumption.

Navigating the multi-faceted permissions process, OX2 will be submitting an application to the Swedish Land and Environment Court for the erection and operation of the Ran wind farm. It’s not just authorization from the Court that’s required, though – the green light from the local municipality will also be a crucial part of the approval process. Moving forward, the public consultation phase is anticipated to commence in September 2023. In a bid to cultivate inclusivity and transparency, the public and authorities alike will be encouraged to engage in dialogue, voice their views, and gather vital information.
Scope for Future Developments: A Glimpse into the Horizon
Despite the Ran project still being in its infancy, its potential impact on the renewable energy sector is undeniable, broadening the horizon for future advancements in this field. It’s interesting to note that this project isn’t presently included in OX2’s declared project development portfolio. In a related development, Landinfra Energy is reportedly making strides in exploring the feasibility of establishing another offshore wind farm. Their efforts are targeted within the Swedish economic zone and territorial waters with nine potential sites identified along the Swedish coast, boasting an impressive capacity potential between 5 and 8 GW.
