Shipbuilding for a Sustainable Future

Japan’s longstanding shipping conglomerate, NYK Line, announced a groundbreaking initiative last Thursday. Teaming up with NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd., Sumitomo Corporation, and Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., they’ve cinched a collaborative agreement aimed at constructing an exceptional Handymax bulk carrier. This innovative vessel will be the world’s first–ship dedicated solely to the transport of copper products while simultaneously slashing CO2 emissions to a groundbreaking zero.

This partnership only solidifies NYK Line’s commitment to creating a more sustainable future. The signing of this memorandum of understanding (MoU) comes merely a year after another leap towards eco-friendly shipping. Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile, a state-owned Chilean entity and leading copper producer, cemented a partnership with NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd., aimed at decarbonized transportation of copper products.

Dedicated Fleet Advancing Decarbonization

NYK Line affirms this prodigious vessel is just the beginning of an impressive fleet of 10 to 15 ships, exclusively transporting copper products from Chile to the Far East. The vision for this vanguard project rests with CODELCO and NBP, orchestrated and built by Oshima, who is more than invested in pioneering this venture alongside them.

Masashi Suda, President of NBP, emphasized the significance of this initiative during his address on their plans for decarbonization. The affiliation paved by the MoU inked with CODELCO last November, set the impetus for this cooperative venture. The objective? The design and construction of a Handymax bulk carrier featuring a dual-fuel engine, capable of utilizing ammonia alongside heavy oil.

The Path to Decarbonization

This collaboration signals a tangible leap towards a decarbonized society. Amidst the collective endeavor towards reducing global carbon footprint, achieving zero-emission international copper transport is a crucial landmark. After a year of deliberations, the tripartite team of NBP, CODELCO, and Oshima Shipbuilding are set to execute their blueprint.

Approaching a Sustainable Future

This pioneering project is just NBP’s maiden step towards contributing to the global decarbonization efforts. With the support of all invested parties and customers, NBP extends its commitment to sustainable operations and the pursuit of a decarbonized society. This journey, although challenging, presents myriad opportunities for industry-wide growth and innovation, setting the stage for the future of sustainable copper product transportation.
