Viasea Unveils Its Eco-Friendly Approach

Norway’s prominent shortsea shipping giant, Viasea, is planning on a game-changing venture. The shipping company has announced that it will convene on the construction of two ground-breaking hydrogen-fuelled ships, outlining its dedication to revolutionizing the shipping industry.

The forthcoming ships are set to operate on both hydrogen and diesel fuel but coupled with additional, low-emission sources of power such as rotor sails and power-storing battery packs. In an age when sustainable alternatives are increasingly regarded, Viasea aims to start its voyage on this revolutionary path with hydrogen refueling taking place exclusively in Norway.

Embracing Hydrogen’s Potential

As the global shipping sector gradually adapts to alternative fuels, Viasea’s new hydrogen-powered vessels will progressively favor hydrogen fuel over diesel. The commendable transition mirrors the company’s proactive approach to contributing to a more sustainable future in shipping.

But there’s more to this achievement than meets the eye. “The combination of hydrogen and diesel operation will result in an over 75% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to a conventional diesel-powered vessel,” highlighted the company. They further added, “With 100% hydrogen operation, the ship will be emission-free,” underscoring their commitment to green shipping.

Energy Efficiency and Contribution

The green makeover is poised to offer significant energy efficiency as well. The energy requirements per container ship are expected to plummet by more than 30%, courtesy of this innovative approach, as per Viasea’s claims.

Adding to the advancement, the Norwegian state funding agency, Enova, is slated to contribute towards the cost of these trailblazing ships. The move showcases not only the company’s commitment to improving environmental conditions but also the unwavering support from the home country.

A Boon for the Future

Viasea’s initiative ushers in a new era of maritime operations. It presents a compelling case for the industry to reconsider traditional methods and opt for cleaner alternative fuels. By reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy efficiency, the Norwegian company sends a clear message to its counterparts around the world – go green or go home. With Norway leading the charge in environmentally friendly shipping, the horizon seems hopeful for a greener, more sustainable future.
