HGK Shipping, having placed an order at the renowned De Gerlien van Tiem shipyard located in Druten, Netherlands, is making waves in the world of maritime transport with a state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly dry goods vessel. This innovative project is designed specifically to meet the distinctive needs of Salzgitter Flachstahl, a symbol of superior quality in steel production. With an eco-friendly design boasting a diesel-electric drive system and solar panels – labelled as “Future-fuel-ready” and tailored to contribute to HGK Shipping and Salzgitter AG’s sustainability missions, this vessel is a remarkable innovation.

An Eco-conscious Design to Replace Obsolete Fleets

In alignment with a recently ratified time charter agreement, this eldritch green ship will supplant one of the three existing vessels in the current fleet. This decision was meticulously mapped out by HGK Shipping Design Center, whose expert team was responsible for the final development of this dry goods vessel for steel supply chains. Pledged to the cause of environmental preservation, HGK’s progressive model is an upgrade on conventional marine transport methods. 

A Technological Triumph – ‘Future-Fuel-Ready’ Ship

The novel dry goods vessel will be powered by a diesel-electric drive system, making it readily adaptable to accommodate future forward-looking drive systems and fuel types. It presents a unique feature – a void space in the midships segment for future installations. Moreover, solar panels will be incorporated into the design atop the hatch covers to generate electric power – energy directly integrated into the ship’s electrical system, marking a pioneering move towards directly feeding the propulsion system.

Catering to Precise Needs and the Promise of Green Shipping

This dry goods vessel has been meticulously tailored to meet the specific requirements of Salzgitter AG in terms of its size, structure, and the shape of the cargo hold. The 86 x 9.5m vessel, with a payload capacity of 1,535 tons, is designed to traverse canals and will be engaged in alternate services between Salzgitter business locations and its clients in the Netherlands and Belgium. Its primary function will be the transportation of raw and input materials crucial for steel production, such as scrap metal. Following the time schedule, the newly commissioned, high-tech vessel is slated to start its service in July 2025.

This groundbreaking vessel is all set to sail towards a friendlier future, showcasing the potential and commitment of HGK Shipping and Salzgitter AG towards an era of eco-conscious, efficient, and sustainable industry practices.
