Autonomous Ferry Unveiled
The world’s first operational self-driving ferry, MF Estelle, has made its debut through a collaboration between the ferry company Torghaen and Norwegian tech firm Zeabuz. Set to begin commercial service in Stockholm, Sweden, the 25-passenger vessel will initially have an operator on board, with plans to ultimately become fully autonomous and monitored from the shore. Regular operations are slated to commence on Monday, with the ferry initially offering four trips per hour before increasing to eight per hour for 15 hours a day.
A Green Solution to Urban Transportation
Estelle is touted as a sustainable and eco-friendly pioneer, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and inspire alternative modes of transportation. “With its electric, self-driving capabilities and advanced digital security, Estelle sets the stage for future advancements in the industry,” said Stein Andre Herigstad-Olsen, CEO of Torghaen AS. Zeabuz envisions its technology creating a “network of virtual bridges” with autonomous electric ferries in cities worldwide, fostering connected and sustainable communities.
Global Expansion and Collaboration
The joint venture between Torghaen and Zeabuz seeks to offer affordable, environmentally friendly transportation not just in Stockholm, but in cities across the globe with navigable waterways. “Our collaboration with Torghaen seeks to connect communities affordably and sustainably, not only in Stockholm but in a large number of cities with navigable waters worldwide,” said Erik Dyrkoren, CEO of Zeabuz. “The launch of this service marks a significant step towards realizing this vision.” The company was founded in 2019 as a spin-off of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s research center for autonomous marine operations and systems.
Enhancing Safety and Efficiency
Zeabuz has also recently partnered with Singaporean Yinson Green Tech, aiming to improve the safety and efficiency of their new fleet of electric harbor crafts. Dr. Øyvind Smogeli, CTO & Co-founder of Zeabuz, emphasized that safety is their top priority, and the full range of autonomy levels will bring great value to maritime operators. “The ambition is a leaner operation with smarter technology. In Stockholm, we will prove that this technology is mature and ready,” said Dr. Smogeli. With its innovative technology and global aspirations, Zeabuz is poised to revolutionize the maritime transport industry for a greener, more interconnected future.
