An Epoch-Making Marine Fuel Survey
VPS, an established testing firm, recently conducted the first quantity survey on a methanol bunkering operation in Singapore. AP Moller-Maersk alongside Hong Lam Marine appointed the firm for the important and historic exercise. This event, held on July 27, pioneers the bunkering of Maersk’s new environmentally-friendly methanol-fuelled feeder vessel in Singapore.
The Role of VPS in quality assurance
Apart from conducting the quantity survey, VPS proved instrumental in fuel quality assurance. The renowned firm obtained fuel samples for meticulous scrutiny in one of its advanced laboratories. This ensured the fuel complied with all necessary quality standards, guaranteeing a safe trip for Maersk’s vessel.
Over the past year, VPS has significantly bolstered its capacity to offer testing services tailored for methanol as a marine fuel. Affirming its position as an industry leader, this accomplishment sets it apart in the marine fuel testing sector.
The Milestone Journey of Maersk’s Vessel
Currently, Maersk’s groundbreaking methanol-fueled feeder vessel is en route from its shipyard in Ulsan, preparing for a naming ceremony scheduled for September in the heart of Copenhagen. Maneuvering its way to the event, the vessel will make two important pit stops. The first is at Port Said, where VPS will recreate a similar bunkering exercise, and the second halt will be at Rotterdam, roughly at August’s end.
The Pride in Pioneering the Green Transition in Shipping
Reflecting on the iconic event, Rahul Choudhuri, the managing director for VPS in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, expressed deep satisfaction and privilege. This collaboration with Maersk and Hong Lam marks a significant milestone in the shipping industry’s drive toward effective decarbonization. He mentioned, “Maersk and Hong Lam have taken a major step forward in shipping’s drive towards decarbonization, along with the support of the MPA, and we are proud to have played our part today and in the future.”
This grand event, a masterstroke in Singapore’s maritime history, shows a promising future for the use of methanol as a green fuel. With proven effectiveness, this venture has set the wheels in motion for a more sustainable nautical future.
