Industry heavyweights are aligning their resources and aptitudes in a transformative collaborative venture aimed at advancing the decarbonization of the maritime sector.
The Power of Partnership
Leading the construction and delivery aspects of the new dual-fuel hydrogen generators is DBR. These generators are not only customized for marine applications but are also the lynchpin of this collaboration. CMB.TECH, on the other hand, will lend its expertise in hydrogen technology, providing all the essential components.
The heart of the dual-fuel hydrogen generator is a MAN V12-24l engine, a component that has proven its excellence in previous collaborations between CMB.TECH and MAN Engines. With an impressive maximum output of 940kVA / 752 kWe at 60Hz, the generator unit has the capacity to operate on diesel or in a dual fuel mode where emission savings of up to 83% are achievable.
Efficient, Effective, and Sustainable
This strategic alliance offers profound advantages. In a typical D2 duty cycle, for instance, the genset can save 53% on diesel consumption and 12% on AdBlue consumption. This hefty cutback leads to a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, offering not just cost savings but also a step towards sustainability.
Moreover, the dual-fuel hydrogen generator is also available in a 50Hz variant which can deliver power to the tune of 822kVA. This adaptability ensures it can operate optimally under varying power requirements.
The First Orders Roll In
Adding momentum to this endeavor is Damen Shipyards, which has ordered the first trio of hydrogen generators. These units are set to power Windcat’s Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs).
As we speak, the first of these vessels is being built at Damen Shipyards. Meanwhile, the inaugural dual-fuel hydrogen generator is slated for installation — in a separate engine room — in the first quarter of 2024.
Beyond the specs and order figures, this initiative underscores the commitment of these industry leaders to turn the tide in the maritime industry, emphasizing sustainability, efficiency, and a cleaner world. Now that’s a powerful stroke in the right direction.
