The Hydrogen Innovation Scheme: a step towards a hydrogen economy

Introduced in 2022, the Hydrogen Innovation Scheme provides capital funding via the Emerging Energy Technologies Fund, allocating a total of £10 million ($12.4 million) distributed over four years, from 2022/23 to 2025/26. The scheme’s primary objectives are to foster innovation in hydrogen production, storage, and distribution technology and reduce hydrogen production costs in Scotland. Additionally, companies not actively involved in the hydrogen sector can transition or diversify their operations, establishing a robust hydrogen supply chain nationwide.

A broad scope of projects

Various storage endeavors, production methods, and other related aspects comprise the schemes unveiled in mid-May. The Port of Aberdeen aspires to explore subsea hydrogen storage at its new South Harbour site to boost its involvement in the sector and support offshore undertakings. As part of this pursuit, the port secured a £150,000 ($186,000) grant from the Scottish Government to examine the feasibility of underwater hydrogen storage.

The H2Shore project: coastal storage and distribution

The H2Shore project will undertake a comprehensive engineering analysis to pinpoint the optimal technological approach and identify a suitable offshore location. Moreover, the project will develop a preliminary business case, with energy consultancy firm Xodus examining the distribution and bunkering requirements, focusing on equipment, processes, and operating procedures.

The Role of Ports in the Transition to hydrogen technologies

Marlene Mitchell, Commercial Manager at the Port of Aberdeen, emphasized the importance of ports in the shift to hydrogen technologies, contributing to the zero-emissions journey and playing a vital role as infrastructure for hydrogen transportation and trade. As part of this initiative, the port seeks to position itself at the forefront of Scotland’s emerging hydrogen economy.

Subsea7’s involvement: evaluating concepts and floating hydrogen production

Subsea7 explores and assesses suitable concepts for offshore hydrogen production, storage, and infrastructure. Scotland’s other grant of £150,000 ($186,000) will help examine large-scale floating hydrogen production. This concurrent concept study zeros in on green hydrogen production offshore via a Floating Hydrogen Production Unit (FHPU) strategically located near offshore wind farms.

Scotland aims to leverage this funding initiative to drive its hydrogen industry forward, establishing itself as an industry leader.
